Biography

Emma Liu is an award-winning, dynamic pianist and chamber musician who has captivated audiences across North America, Europe, and Asia. 

Winning her first piano competition at the age of ten, Ms. Liu received top awards in the PianoArts North American Piano Competition, which led to a concerto performance of Schumann's Piano Concerto with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Andrews Sill. Other awards include prizes in the American Protege International Piano Competition, the Harvard Musical Association Competition, Steinway Society of Massachusetts Piano Competition and the A. Ramon Rivera Piano Competition. 

A sought-after collaborative pianist, Ms. Liu has performed in esteemed venues and festivals such as Carnegie Hall, the Music Academy of the West, Steinway Hall, the Eastman School of Music, the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Bowdoin Music Festival, the Holland International Music Sessions, and Taiwan’s National Recital Hall. Among the numerous musicians with whom she has collaborated include flutists Marianne Gedigian, Maron Khoury, Lorna McGhee, Sarah Shin, and Linda Toote. She has also collaborated with distinguished artists such as violinist James Thompson, clarinetist Richie Hawley, bassoonist Benjamin Kamins, and members of the Boston Trio and Ying Quartet. Known for her versatility and musical sensitivity, Ms. Liu is frequently engaged for recitals, concerto performances, and chamber music concerts throughout the world.

An avid chamber music advocate, Ms. Liu is the founder of the North Jersey Chamber Music Collective, an organization dedicated to creating performance opportunities and fostering collaboration among musicians in the region. The Collective recently presented a successful benefit concert in support of SAVE Mendham’s environmental initiatives.

A dedicated and passionate educator, Ms. Liu enjoys working with students of all ages and nationalities and believes deeply in individualized, student-centered instruction tailored to each musician’s goals and learning style. Her students have been accepted to renowned institutions including the Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, and Oberlin Conservatory. She currently serves on the music faculty of The Pingry School while maintaining an active private studio in the New York metropolitan area. 

Ms. Liu holds degrees from Columbia University, the Eastman School of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts from New England Conservatory’s Preparatory Program, where she studied with Nelita True, HaeSun Paik, Katherine Brown, and Roberto Poli. Beyond music, she enjoys learning new languages, spending time in nature, and capturing the world through photography.
